Democracy Cities begins with A simple idea—cities and municipalities can engage in comprehensive and effective work to promote democracy and citizen participation in their own communities.

there is the possibility of an institution that can help to spark a democratic renewal on its own:

cities and municipalities.

Democracy Cities works to:

  1. Network and Connect Cities: We recognize the importance of building community, allowing city officials and community members to step back from the day to day, get to know each other, and build real relationships. We conduct bi-weekly calls for cities to connect on topics like digital engagement, promoting local journalism, addressing redistricting, and enhancing civics education;

  2. Amplify Successes and Best Practices: Based on interviews with cities and municipalities across the country, we publish and promote case studies of how cities are actively promoting democratic practices and citizen participation through innovative programming and resource allocation;

  3. Make the Case: We work to create a positive, compelling rationale for why cities should focus their efforts on democracy and citizen participation, including spending resources, both time and financial, on its implementation.
